Therapeutic Ultrasound

When people hear the word “ultrasound” they commonly think of the kind that is used during pregnancy show images of their soon to arrive baby. Therapeutic ultrasound is different and is commonly used by chiropractors and physical therapists.

How is ultrasound used therapeutically?

It is often used for treating chronic pain and promoting tissue healing in conditions such as:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shoulder pains including frozen shoulder
  • Tendonitis
  • Ligamental injuries

What to Expect

Your chiropractor or assistant will apply some gel to the region being treated. They will place a transducer in that region and slowly start moving it around. Moving it around treats the entire region needed and avoids causing burns.

What are the risks of therapeutic ultrasound?

The US FDA has approved the use of ultrasound by professionals. It does have the ability to cause harm if left in one place, that is why your therapist moves it around. Be sure to warn your therapist if you have any of the following as they are indications you should not be treated, or treatment needs to be modified:

  • Open wounds
  • Pregnancy
